Bratislava Castle
Whatever article or blog about Slovakia you open, you will probably see Bratislava Castle on the front page as a symbol of the country. Bratislava Castle is perhaps the most famous piece of architecture in Slovakia.
The main Castle is located on the southern rocky hill of the Little Carpathians, on the cliff above the left bank of the Danube river, and it is the main attraction and symbol of the country.
The castle was literally restored from ruins in the second part of the 20th century. It symbolizes the thousand-year Sovak history and is included in the list of National cultural monuments of Slovakia.
The construction looks like a real castle from a fairy tale, whose magnificence is highlighted by the pinnacle of The Crown Tower on the southwest side, built above the cornice of the tower’s roof.
Big windows and stone portals had appeared during the reign of the King of Hungary and Croatia – Sigismund. Moreover, the castle contained fragments of Gothic and Renaissance construction elements with two bastions. Initially the entrance was made through the gates located on the two sides of the tower.
Corvin’s gates on the southern side of the building lead to the city and the bridge. The gates are preserved in excellent condition, so they did not need any restoration. That is why while walking around the castle you can feel like King Sigismund observing his estates.
Nowadays the castle is housing different exhibitions as well as the archeological section of Slovak National Museum. It has valuable expositions, including archeological and numismatic collections, reflecting the full history from antiquity to present days.
Permanent exhibition is called “Treasures of Slovakia’s past” and it belongs to the public. You can get to this attraction by public transport. Trolley station “Grand” is located near the main entrance, you can also take a walk from Slovak National Uprising Square or St. Martin’s Cathedral. Either way your stroll won’t be boring, and views from the famous castle will exceed your expectations!
