Main holidays in Slovakia
Holidays are a great opportunity not only to take a break from everyday work, but also to spend time with your family, walk around the city or go on a trip. On some holidays in Slovakia, state institutions are closed, shops do not work. National holidays in the country are associated with the most important historical events in the development of statehood or are associated with religious events.
January 1 is not only the date of the world-famous New Year’s holiday, but also on this day Slovaks celebrate a public holiday – the Day of the Foundation of the Republic. Mass cultural events are held on the streets of settlements. On this day, the President awards public figures with state awards.
The favorite religious holiday of the inhabitants of the country is the Epiphany or the Three Kings, it is celebrated on January 6th. On this day, it is customary to visit the church, as well as illuminate the houses. In the evening, guys dressed in white shirts and with crowns on their heads go from house to house and perform the Epiphany play about the visit of Jesus by three kings. They carry out the procession of the Magi or the procession with a star.
The usual Slavic holidays are also celebrated in the country: May 1 – Labor Day and May 8 – Victory Day.
The most important historical date for the Slovak Republic is August 29, in 1944, the army uprised against the Wehrmacht. Every year, the nation celebrates the Day of the Slovak National Uprising with festive events.
The Constitution Day of the Slovak Republic is celebrated on September 1st. On this day, the main event is the Open Doors Day in Parliament. Everyone has the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of the Slovak Republic and visit the Rada building from the inside. By the way, in Slovakia the new academic year starts on September 2nd.
The celebration of the Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy on November 17th symbolizes the memory of the demonstrators at the Velvet Revolution who fought for the fall of communism. On this day off for workers, a public holiday, it is customary to celebrate cultural events and festivities.
Residents attach particular importance to religious holidays, such as: Christmas from December 24 to December 26, Catholic Easter, July 5 – Cyril and Methodius Day, September 15 celebrate the Day of St. Virgin Mary, November 1 – All Saints Day.
